Long regarded as one of the most challenging resort courses in the Valley, the award-winning Arizona Grand Golf Course (formerly known as Phantom Horse Golf Club on South Mountain) completed a $2.5 million redesign in the fall of 2002. The highlight of the redesign is "Alcatraz," the challenging island green on #18. Combined with the existing "Jailhouse Steps" on #12, you have two of the most exciting holes in the Valley. A total of five holes were modified in the redesign and the par-71 course now measures over 6300 yards from the back tees.

Pete Dye designed this links-style course which features dramatically rolling fairways bordered by lush mounding and Dye's signature use of railroad ties and hidden bunkers. Karsten is an extremely scenic layout that is always well maintained with three holes (#9, #16, and #18) voted among the most difficult in Arizona. The facility also offers a gorgeous clubhouse with state-of-the-art amenities. Centrally located, ASU Karsten is just 10 minutes south of Scottsdale.
The North Course is the original course at The Boulders and is known as the more forgiving of the two courses. There's more room off the tee here, but you should not be fooled. The finish is especially difficult with five par fours over 425 yards on the final nine.
The South Course at The Boulders is one of the deserts most scenic layouts. Fairways throughout are framed by the desert and run through huge boulder piles from which the resort takes its name. If you look closely you may also catch the occasional glimpse of desert wildlife darting about.
The 7014-yard par-72 Indian Bend course, layed out in links-style, was designed by Arthur Jack Snyder in 1978 and remains a dynamic test of your best golf game. The championship caliber layout features secluded sand traps, rolling terrain, tree-lined fairways, and magnificent mountain backdrop.

To play The Golf Club at Eagle Mountain is to experience golf at its finest. The Legacy, an 18-hole course with lush green fairways, forgiving rough, well-placed hazards, and manicured greens, offers a challenge for golfers of all skill levels. Indigenous grasses, wild flowers, shrubs, and trees surround the rolling terrain. Its elevation provides exceptional views of South Mountain, Squaw Peak, and the downtown Phoenix skyline. The expansive facility also features two putting greens, chipping greens with bunkers, and a 300-yard double-ended driving range.
Situated in Glendale, The Legend is an Arnold Palmer/Ed Seay-designed course that is traditional in style. Although water is a hazard on nine holes, most fairways offer generous landing areas. At over 7000 yards, this can be a rather challenging course, especially when it is windy. Homes line most of the fairways, but the views of the foothills are a nice distraction.
One of Scottsdale's most outstanding facilities, Legend Trail winds through the Sonoran Desert with breathtaking views of Pinnacle Peak. Course designer Rees Jones has done a fantastic job of balancing the layout to create a fair test for less experienced players while also providing a formidable challenge for the more accomplished player. A wonderful clubhouse houses one of America's top 100 golf shops along with the Trails End Grill, which serves their own famous Breakfast Burrito.

Redesigned by original architect Ken Kavanaugh, over 250,000 cubic yards of earth was moved to create the NEW Longbow Golf Club. There was not a hole that went untouched as new holes were created and the original signature holes were improved and enhanced. The total yardage was increased over 300 yards to play over 7000 yards from the back tees. Yet, over 13 acres of turf was added to the course to create wider more receptive fairways. Other improvements to Longbow Golf Club include a larger practice range, expanded chipping and practice areas, larger playing surfaces and a new Clubhouse with expansive Special Events Patio. Southern Dunes Golf Club (formerly Royal Dunes) is unique among semi-private golf clubs in the Southwest. The Fred Couples and Curley-Schmidt design team has sculpted a land-links style course by moving great amounts of earth to create dunes-like features. Most holes feature wide and forgiving landing areas that invite players to grip it and rip it off the tee. The true test on this layout is found around the greens. The atmosphere at the club is relaxed and welcoming. Service and conditioning standards are extremely high.
There are three distinct nine-hole designs at Starfire at Scottsdale Country Club -- The King, The Hawk, and The Squire. In the 1980's, Arnold Palmer was brought in to redesign the original 18 and add a completely new nine, now called The King. The result of Palmer's work is still paying off to this day as the entire layout is lined with old eucalyptus, pine, and cottonwood trees. Located in north central Scottsdale, Starfire is a perfect choice for your first day of golf as it not as long and penal as some neighboring courses.

This course was originally designed by Pete Dye in the early 1980's and was then redesigned by Arthur Hills in 1987. Stonecreek is a wonderful layout with extensive fairway mounding, generous landing areas, and water on seven holes. The club is managed by American Golf, which can assure travelers of great service and terrific course conditions. Centrally located, the course is just 15 minutes north of Scottsdale.

Located in Fountain Hills, 1/2 mile north of Eagle Mountain, is this picturesque desert course. Sunridge features Penncross bent-grass greens, five sets of tees, elevated tee boxes, mounded fairways, and a 75-foot natural rock formation which forms the canyon surrounding this course. The Keith Foster design takes you down into a peaceful canyon on the front side and brings you back up and out of it on the back. It's truly one of the areas "super courses."

The landscape of the new Saguaro course features fascinating movement that has allowed Crenshaw and Coore to design a course that is unique to the desert, and differ from the original Cholla course. The championship layout will challenge players of all skill levels with a beautifully fair test of golf, and will require them to play a variety of shots and find solutions to unusual challenges. Fashioned with walking in mind, Saguaro is a refreshing classic throwback to golf course design. Tees are located near the preceding green, and are often part of the same turf complex. Since it opened in 1996, Kierland has been applauded as one the best courses in the desert. Scott Miller's dynamic 27-hole design challenges the golfer with changes in elevation, more than 300 bunkers, dry desert washes, stands of desert trees, and a variety of water hazards. The Blue has been described as tricky and subtle. Playing to a length just over 6,000 yards, but a par of 70, the test can be a bit deceiving. Here is a creative course. One full of decisions and thought provoking strategy. The hallmark of Robert Trent Jones' design can be found in the array of deep and perilous bunkers, ponds and dog-leg fairways. The Blue Course is a course full of contradictions. Take for example the opening holes -- a par 5, par 3, par 5, par 3 and yet another par 5. It is a roller-coaster of golf holes, each one offering a different obstacle and challenge.
Perhaps most photographed is the Blue's 15th hole, a short 140-yard par 3 to an island green. More than one match will be won or lost at this "simple little hole." Among the finishing holes is the 17th, a par 3 to a green built as a mirror image of the famous 16th at Augusta where Mr. Jones' remodeling work has endured as one of the most famous holes in all of golf.

At more than 7,300 yards, The Gold Course anchors the Wigwam golf trio. Robert Trent Jones, Sr. created The Gold to rival the famous South Course at Firestone CC in Akron, Ohio. Among the highlights are the 645-yard 4th hole, a par five that requires strength and patience. The 8th is a long par four to a green perched above an ominous canal. But it is the finish, that stretch from the 16th home, that will test the nerves of any golfer. The 16th is a par 3 over water to a split-level green, the 17th is a par 4 to a narrow green across a pond, and the 18th is among the toughest finishing holes in all of Arizona. At the 18th the golfer faces a diagonal tee shot across water, followed by an approach to a green sitting right on the edge of a canal. As with all great golf holes, the 18th allows the golfer to choose the degree of risk.

The Red Course was created by Red Lawrence, the golf course architect responsible for Arizona's first desert golf course. His work at The Wigwam is a complement to The Gold and Blue Courses. With a length in between its two siblings, The Red plays alongside and over streams and ponds.
